LG sells you a refrigerator and a washing machine — and, increasingly, the chiller that keeps a room full of Nvidia GPUs from melting.

Who they are

LG Electronics traces back to GoldStar, founded in 1958, and is best known globally for televisions, refrigerators, and washing machines. Far less visible outside Korea is its Eco Solution division, which has quietly supplied cooling systems to domestic and international data centers for more than a decade, applying the same core refrigeration and compressor engineering that goes into a home appliance, scaled up to industrial size. Ryu Jae-cheol became CEO on January 1, 2026, succeeding Cho Joo-wan, and has framed the company's strategy around a "high-performance portfolio" that leans harder into B2B segments like this one.

What they do

At Data Center World 2026 in Washington, D.C. (April 20–22, 2026), LG showcased a full lineup of AI data center thermal management: air-cooled free-cooling chillers that optimize energy use based on internal temperature, liquid cooling coolant distribution units it's ramping into full supply this year, and, for the first time, an immersion cooling system developed jointly with US-based Green Revolution Cooling for the tank hardware and SK enmove for the coolant fluid, in which servers are submerged directly in a dielectric liquid. LG also builds its own magnetic and gas-foil compressors, CRAH units, and EC fans in-house, plus a monitoring software layer called DCCM (Data Center Cooling Management) that watches for early signs of component failure before a server has to shut down.

How LG Electronics makes money

The data center cooling business sits inside LG's broader Eco Solution division, which the company is treating as a next-generation B2B growth axis. LG has told investors it internally projects the addressable market for its data center chiller business alone to grow from roughly $1.6 billion in 2026 to $12.7 billion by 2030, and is reportedly doubling the R&D headcount dedicated to data center cooling from around 100 to around 200 people. LG posted record first-quarter 2026 revenue of KRW 23.7 trillion company-wide, with operating profit up 32.9% year over year.

The bigger trend

LG Electronics' overall business is being reshaped under Ryu around a shift away from relying solely on its traditional consumer appliance base and toward B2B segments such as vehicle components, robotics, and now data center infrastructure. Data center cooling is one of several bets management is making to diversify growth beyond home appliances, leaning on engineering capabilities the company already had in an adjacent business rather than starting from scratch.

What to watch

Whether the immersion cooling collaboration with Green Revolution Cooling and SK enmove moves from demonstration to commercial deployment; whether the doubled cooling R&D headcount translates into actual hyperscaler design wins rather than conference showcases; and how the $1.6 billion to $12.7 billion addressable-market forecast holds up as competitors including Vertiv, Eaton, and Schneider Electric chase the same liquid- and immersion-cooling opportunity.

Frequently asked questions

Does LG Electronics really sell data center cooling equipment, not just home appliances?

Yes. LG's Eco Solution division has supplied cooling systems to data centers for more than a decade, separate from its consumer appliance business, and is now expanding specifically into AI data center chillers, liquid cooling, and immersion cooling.

What is immersion cooling, and who is LG partnering with on it?

Immersion cooling submerges servers directly in a non-conductive dielectric fluid to remove heat. LG is co-developing the tank system with US-based Green Revolution Cooling and the coolant fluid itself with SK enmove.

How big does LG think its data center cooling business could get?

LG has told investors it internally estimates the addressable market for its data center chiller business alone could grow from about $1.6 billion in 2026 to roughly $12.7 billion by 2030.
