Who they are

Eric Sung founded Intellian in 2004 with an unfashionable product: a stabilised satellite TV antenna for boats. Keeping a dish pointed at a geostationary satellite from a deck that pitches and rolls in three axes is a harder mechanical problem than it sounds, and Intellian got good at it early.

The company built its innovation centre and factory in Pyeongtaek during the 2009 financial crisis, opened it in 2010, and expanded outward from maritime television into maritime broadband β€” VSAT terminals for cruise ships, cargo fleets, offshore rigs, and navies. By the 2020s Intellian held the largest global share of the maritime VSAT antenna market, exporting under its own brand to more than 60 countries through a network of over 600 dealers and customers, with a European hub in Rotterdam and offices across the US, UK, and Asia.

Then the market changed underneath it, in the best possible way. Geostationary satellites sit still; low-Earth-orbit satellites cross the sky in minutes and hand off to the next one. Suddenly the industry needed antennas that track fast, switch seamlessly, and work across multiple orbits and frequency bands at once β€” which is exactly the kind of problem a company built on stabilised tracking mechanisms is unusually well positioned to solve.

What they do

Intellian's product line now spans three tiers, and it's worth separating them because they sell to completely different customers.

  • User terminals β€” the antennas on ships, vehicles, and remote sites. This includes the traditional parabolic maritime VSAT line, tri-band systems installed on hundreds of cruise ships, and the newer flat-panel electronically steered antennas (ESAs) with no moving parts, which are the higher-margin future of this segment.
  • Gateway antenna systems β€” the big four-metre dishes that sit at a constellation's landing stations and pull down the whole network's traffic. The customer list reads like a directory of everyone building a constellation that isn't Starlink: Eutelsat OneWeb, SES, Telesat, and Iridium, whose Certus GMDSS maritime safety terminals Intellian co-developed. That positioning is deliberate. Every operator competing with SpaceX needs ground hardware, and very few companies can supply it at scale.

How they make money

Intellian sells hardware β€” it is a manufacturer, not a service provider β€” so revenue is a function of unit volume, product mix, and the order backlog converting into shipments. The mix shift is the profitability story: flat-panel terminals and gateway systems carry higher value per unit than the legacy parabolic maritime products that built the company.

That shift showed up in the numbers in 2025. Consolidated revenue grew 24.0% year over year and the company swung back to both operating profit and net profit after a difficult stretch. The order backlog closed 2025 at β‚©428.6 billion, up 68.7% and a record, with gateway-related orders accounting for β‚©292.2 billion of that β€” meaning the majority of the backlog sits in the newest, largest-ticket product line.

Q1 2026 continued the trend: consolidated revenue of β‚©64.7 billion (up 49.3% year over year and a record first quarter), operating profit of β‚©600 million, and net income of β‚©13.5 billion. Intellian occupies Stage 4: Ground Systems & Infrastructure, and it sits at both ends of that stage simultaneously. Its gateway antennas are network infrastructure β€” the fixed sites where a constellation's traffic reaches the terrestrial internet. Its user terminals are the opposite end of the same link, the box on the customer's roof or mast.

That dual position is genuinely useful, because the two businesses have different cycles. Gateway orders arrive in large lumps when an operator commits to a constellation build. Terminal volume follows years later, when that constellation starts signing subscribers. Intellian gets paid at both moments β€” first for the ground network, then for the devices that use it.

The bigger trend

The satellite communications industry is currently splitting into two camps, and the split is doing more to shape Intellian's addressable market than any product decision it could make.

On one side is SpaceX, which is vertically integrated: it builds the satellites, launches them, and manufactures its own user terminals. On the other side is essentially everyone else β€” Eutelsat OneWeb, SES, Telesat, Amazon's Leo constellation, regional operators, and the mobile carriers layering satellite into their networks. That second camp does not build its own antennas, and the number of firms that can supply high-performance multi-orbit tracking hardware at scale is small.

The technical direction is toward electronically steered flat panels: no motors, no radome, lower maintenance, and the ability to track several satellites at once. Those are hard to manufacture cheaply, which is why the transition has taken longer than the industry predicted. Whoever solves the cost curve on ESAs first captures a large share of the terminal market β€” and that race is now the central competitive question in the ground segment, alongside the slower-burning question of how much capacity the industry ends up needing to build in total.
