Who they are

Forward Industries spent more than six decades as an unremarkable industrial design company serving medical and technology clients. That identity ended abruptly in September 2025, when the company closed a $1.65 billion private placement led by three of the most recognizable names in crypto investing — Galaxy Digital, Jump Crypto, and Multicoin Capital — to launch what instantly became the largest publicly listed Solana treasury in the world.

Multicoin’s Kyle Samani, an early Solana investor going back to the network’s original seed round, became Forward’s board chairman as part of the deal, giving the company a level of Solana-native credibility no other treasury on this page can match.

What they actually do

Hold and stake a very large SOL position. Forward Industries holds nearly 7 million SOL — more than its next three largest competitors combined — with essentially all of it staked to earn on-chain yield.

Deploy capital “actively,” not just passively. Unlike a simple buy-and-hold approach, Forward has partnered with Sanctum to issue a liquid staking token (fwdSOL) that keeps staked SOL usable as DeFi collateral, and has framed its strategy around sophisticated on-chain deployment rather than static holding.

Put its own stock on-chain. In a first for a public US company, Forward tokenized its SEC-registered shares directly onto the Solana blockchain through Superstate’s Opening Bell platform — letting FWDI shares move from a traditional brokerage account into a Solana wallet and be used within DeFi.

Position for sector consolidation. With no corporate debt, management has said Forward intends to use its unlevered balance sheet to acquire or absorb weaker digital asset treasury companies during a period when many SOL treasuries trade at steep discounts to their holdings.

How they make money

Solana price appreciation on its treasury plus staking yield (roughly 6-7%, declining gradually as Solana’s issuance schedule tapers) — the original industrial design business has been entirely superseded by the treasury strategy.

Where it sits in the value chain

The tokenized-shares layer (dashed) is genuinely novel — equity that lives directly on the same chain as the treasury it represents.

The bigger trend it’s riding

Forward Industries is the flagship example of Solana-native crypto funds effectively taking over a small public “shell” company to build a treasury vehicle — a faster path to public markets than a traditional IPO. It’s also central to a broader theme unique to Solana treasuries versus bitcoin ones: because SOL can be staked, restructured into DeFi collateral, and even used to tokenize the company’s own equity, these vehicles can be far more operationally active than a passive bitcoin holder like Strategy.

What to watch (not what to do)

What to watch (not what to do)

  • Unrealized losses on the initial purchase. Forward's SOL was acquired at an average price well above where SOL has traded for much of 2026, leaving the position showing a substantial paper loss at various points — a reminder that treasury size doesn't protect against entry-price risk.
  • Whether the consolidation strategy materializes. Management has talked about acquiring distressed SOL treasury peers, but as of mid-2026 this remained a stated intention rather than a completed transaction.
  • Novelty risk of tokenized shares. Being the first public company with equity live on Solana is a genuine innovation, but it's also untested at scale — regulatory and operational risks here are not yet well understood.
